  Description: CFDA E-Z Practice Target

Designed for use with the Westerner Speed Timer 3000

If you want to become proficient in your Cowboy Fast Draw© skills you'll need to practice regularly and often. This is the quickest, easiest and least expensive way we've found for you to set up your single target home practice range in your garage or basement. Seeing a need to make equipment available for CFDA members, we have designed this affordable alternative.

The E-Z Practice Target consists of:
    - 24" diameter Lexan target disc
    - ½" galvanized pipe stand
    - ¾" plywood base
    - 2 flanges pre-attached to the target and base
    - 1 small tube of white lithium grease
    - 1 application roller to apply the lithium grease
    - glue (used when putting the target together)

You can purchase the target to use by itself or with the Westerner Speed Timer that you already own, or buy the target in a package along with the timer. This combination gives you everything you need to start practicing Cowboy Fast Draw.

Notes: The Westerner Speed Timer comes with the timer, light and a 35' cable. The light is built with a screw mount in the bottom that attaches to the E-Z Practice Target. This target system utilizes a sound pick-up in the timer unit that hears the shot being fired, rather than an impact sensor (there is no need for wires to the target other than the light cable). Please check out the Westerner Speed Timer website for more information on this Fast Draw timer.

Some Practice Tips
  1. You can either hook the timer to your belt or set it on a table next to your firing position.
  2. Follow the instructions with the timer to learn all that it does.
  3. Notice in the bottom picture on the left that the light is on and there is a bullet mark on the grease just to the left of the light. You will be able to verify all your hits on your target and use the roller to re-grease the target as needed.
  4. In some indoor areas there may by an echo that causes more than one time to be recorded on the timer. Check the timer to make sure that you are looking at Shot #1. It's easy to review Shot #1 using the buttons on the timer if this occurs, and to reduce the sensitivity using the dial in the back of the timer (please be very gentle when adjusting).
  5. Since the timer picks up the report of your shot it only takes a few thousandths of a second for the sound to travel the few feet to the timer that's beside you. Shotgun primers normally propel wax projectiles at about 600 fps. So in round numbers you should add 2 hundredths of a second at 15' and 3 hundredths of a second at 21' (CFDA Championship Distance).
  6. You should use a minimum of 5/8" plywood for a backstop behind the targets, as wax bullets can cause damage to wall boards.
  7. It's really helpful if you can also mark misses in order to learn how to improve your draw. Large pieces of cardboard can work well, and can be taped to cover bullet marks.
  8. It's better to practice a little each day than a lot once a week or so.
